The Sauvie Island Center is recruiting for several open positions on our Board of Directors. Board members serve 2-year terms, which can be renewed.
The Sauvie Island Center engages Portland area children by providing hands-on educational field trips at our Sauvie Island location in Metro’s Howell Territorial Park and our adjacent farm partner, Sauvie Island Organics. Through our education programs, the Center aims to increase food, farm, and environmental literacy of the next generation.
We are a small but growing organization. In 2016, we served more than 2,500 children and community members with our programs. About 1,800 participated through spring and fall field trips with their schools. Half of these children participated through our scholarship program that serves children from high-poverty schools in the region. Other children participated in family farm days or through our summer farm camps.
While we don’t expect every board member to take on every task, we need board members who are passionate about using their expertise to support the Sauvie Island Center. We are looking for fun, committed, and energetic people to help us connect children, families, and the community to food, farming, and the land. We aim to inspire youth and community members to taste new fruits and vegetables, eat healthy foods, and be good environmental stewards.
We seek board members who can make significant contributions to our organization in the following areas:
- sustainable agriculture and food systems
- youth education
- community health and nutrition
- environmental education
- restaurant and other food related industries
- public relations/communications
- diversity, equity and inclusion
- non-profit management
- fundraising & community outreach.
We have six full Board meetings per year, and each Board member serves on at least one of our committees (Program, Communications/Fundraising, and Executive). We estimate that each Board member spends about five hours per month on SIC related work.
We also ask each Board member to participate in Sauvie Island Center fundraising and to donate a personally significant amount to the organization each year.
If you are interested in joining our Board, please complete the application and return your response to our Executive Director Elizabeth Schmitz via email (Elizabeth@sauvieislandcenter.org) by no later than September 15, 2017. New board members will attend a board orientation in early November. The first full board meeting for new board members will be held on November 21, 2017 from 6 – 7:30 PM.
