Dear Friends:
Our last round of board recruitment ended on 6/30/18. We received several thoughtful applications from some very impressive individuals. While our open call for board members has ended, we are always interested in hearing from community members who are interested in supporting our organization through board membership. Feel free to review the information below. If you are interested, complete the application and follow instructions for submission. We’ll be in touch!
The Sauvie Island Center engages Portland area children by providing hands-on educational field trips at our Sauvie Island location in Metro’s Howell Territorial Park and our adjacent farm partner, Sauvie Island Growers (formerly Sauvie Island Organics). Through our education programs, the Center aims to increase food, farm, and environmental literacy of the next generation.
In 2017 we served more than 2,900 children and community members with our programs. More than 2,050 participated through spring and fall field trips with their schools. Half of these children participated through our scholarship program that serves children from high-poverty schools in the region. Other children participated in family farm days or through our summer farm camps.
While we don’t expect every board member to take on every task, we need board members who are passionate about using their expertise to support the Sauvie Island Center. We seek board members who can make significant contributions to our organization in the following areas:

We have up to 8 full Board meetings per year, and each Board member serves on at least one of our committees (Program, Resource, and Executive). We estimate that each Board member spends about five to ten hours per month on SIC related work.
We also ask each Board member to participate in Sauvie Island Center fundraising and to donate a personally significant amount to the organization each year.
If you are interested in joining our Board, please review the Board Member Agreement and the job description, then complete the application and return your response by email to our Interim Executive Director Joanne Lazo. For more information about our long-term goals, our current five year strategic plan is available here. New board members will attend a board orientation in early September.
Thank you, and we hope to hear from you soon!
Joanne Lazo
Interim Executive Director
