Sauvie Island Center Staff

Jill Kuehler

Jill Kuehler
Sauvie Island Center Director

Inspired by her summers spent in her grandmother's garden digging for worms, Jill still cannot keep the dirt out from under her fingernails. While in the Peace Corps in Guatemala she helped a rural elementary school install a garden that continues to provide food for school lunches. Commitment to connecting children with their food source has been her passion ever since.

Jill has been managing the Lents International Farmers Market for two seasons. The first internationally-themed market in Portland, the LIFM has the goal of serving the health, economic, and social needs of southeast Portland's diverse residents and providing a place for emerging, immigrant and refugee farmers to sell what they grow.

Previously Jill was the Wellness Coordinator at Abernethy Elementary, developing a model wellness program centered on the school's Scratch Kitchen and Garden of Wonders where students learn to grow, prepare and eat good food.

Sarah Brown

Sarah Brown

Sarah loves eating fresh delicious veggies from people she knows. Getting her hands dirty and watching the fruits of her labor flourish are two of her greatest joys. One of her most important lessons from studying sustainable agriculture at UC Davis is how essential it is to share this knowledge with our youth. Fostering an appreciation for our local farmers, seasonal food, and the environment on which they so heavily depend, is what she believes is vital for the health and sustainability of our communities.

While not leading field trips and working with her fellow sustainability educators, Sarah is busy growing vegetables, cooking seasonally, and loving every minute she has to enjoy the sun.
